A lot of children's recipes tend to be desserts. It's what they are most interested in eating, of course, and the ingredients are usually pretty simple to measure and mix. However, getting children involved with dinner preparation or even with making after school snacks is a great way to get them interested in healthy snacks and even assist with lunch or dinner preparations. Here are two similar recipes that are great for kids to make.

Ham Roll-Ups

What you need:

1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough
1/4 cup honey mustard
8 thin slices of ham
2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup dry bread crumbs

What you do:

Divide crescent roll dough along perforations until you have 8 triangles. Spread a thin layer of honey mustard on each triangle. Top each triangle with 1 slice of ham and sprinkle with shredded cheese.

Roll the triangle lengthwise, starting from the largest end and going to the smallest end. Brush the top with melted butter, then roll in dry bread crumbs. Place on a baking tray and bake at 350° following the crescent roll package directions, or until browned. Makes 8.

Chicken Roll-ups

What you need:

2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
1 (3 oz.) package cream cheese
1 cup chopped black olives
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese.
2 tbsp. sour cream
1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough
Melted butter
Parmesan Cheese

What you do: Mix the first 5 ingredients together in a food processor until well mixed and pasty. Divide crescent rolls into 4 rectangles and press perforated seams together. Spread chicken mixture over rectangles. Then, roll lengthwise and brush with melted butter. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top and cut each roll into 6 slices. Bake according to package directions, or until golden brown. Makes 24.

Ask someone to choose a girl's name, and animal, and a thing. Then sing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and substitute the key words: ________ had a little __________, it's fleece was white as _________. Choose other nursery rhymes and make some silly substitutions.
