This past summer, we saw a lot of those portable rock climbing walls at local fairs and carnivals. It always seemed that there were long lines of children and adults waiting to try to scale the vertical wall full of slender rocky outcroppings. I've seen advertisements of rock climbing gyms in my area, and I really want to give them a try. I did a little research and found out more about this little-known family-style activity. While I don't think it'll work for babies or toddlers, of course, kids as young as 3 can take on some form of climbing.
Rock gyms, as they are often called, are a good workout, both physically and mentally. The activity builds confidence in kids and requires them to really think as they have to plan out their course of ascent. Did I mention the fun? Kids will hardly realize they're exercising as they climb higher and higher.
A rock climbing gym is safe and affordable as well. Knowledgeable staffers ensure that the lines and cables are all secure, and provide lots of training and advice on which activities are best for what age group and physical ability. Climbing takes a lot of strength, and those who are not used to the efforts can tire quickly. However, it's so much fun that families want to come back for more. It's a real adrenaline rush for all ages.
Most rock gyms have extra activities, such as birthday parties, climbing lessons and more. Check with the gym nearest you for a list of all-inclusive features they offer. Most places will let you pay for one-time visits, several visits or even a year-long contract for a family pass. It's a fun way to get the family together and have fun in the world of climbing.

Together, go through the child's baby book and talk about the day they were born. Share your feelings and thoughts from that day.
