Just because it's raining doesn't mean you can't go outside. As long as parents and children are dressed appropriately and it isn't a cold rain, you can have a lot of fun outside. From the fresh smell of the wet world to splashing in puddles and listening to the tappity-tap-tap of raindrops, a simple walk in the rain can become a memorable experience. Of course it goes without saying that you shouldn't walk around in a thunder and lightning storm. Wait until you have a rainy day with a gentle gray cloudy sky.
First, you'll need the all-important umbrella. Make sure you each have your own for maximum coverage and complete fun. Wear good shoes that won't get toes wet. You don't necessarily need rain boots, but if you have them, wear them. You can spray almost any pair of shoes with water repellent, which is available at most shoe stores, to make them suitable for an activity in the rain. A light waterproof jacket is a good idea too. Then, start your rainy day walk.
- On your walk, you can talk about rain, thunder, lightning, and the water cycle. If little ones are frightened of thunder and lightning, hopefully you can use the opportunity for teaching.
- Sing all the rain songs you know, like "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Rain Rain Go Away." The raindrop song is one that my mom taught us, and I haven't heard it much so I'll post the words here:
If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops, Oh, what a world it would be!
I'd stand outside with my mouth open wide, Singing ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah,
If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops Oh, what a world it would be! - Jump in puddles and see who can make the biggest splash. Shoes will dry and so will pants, so just have some fun.
- Try to catch raindrops on your tongue. Flip your umbrella to one side for 5 seconds, catch some raindrops, then get back under the umbrella.
- Watch for rainbows in the sky as the storm moves through. Enjoy the beauty of nature, freshly washed and sparkling.
15 Minute Moment
Line up your Halloween pumpkins in order of largest to smallest. Guess which ones will weigh the most and put them on the bathroom scale to see if you are right. This is good for pumpkins that are pretty close in size and shape.
