With two daughters, we have a large amount of dress-ups, baby dolls and other girly toys. We've also gathered a lot of princess books and my 7-year-old still enjoys reading some of these and looking at the illustrations, even if they are a little young for her. My 18-month-old daughter loves books in general, so it's a perfect excuse for older sister to read to younger sister. On this list, I've puposefully stayed away from the Disney Princesses and the Barbie Princesses and stuck to more classic versions of princess stories.

A Book of Princesses by Sally Gardner This retelling of the classic stories of Snow White, Cinderella, The Princess and the Pea,and more are refreshingly retold. Lovely illustrations bring these timeless classics to life.

Lottie's Princess Dress by Doris Dorrie Most parents of headstrong children have done the wardrobe battle, and this book is a clever capture of such a moment. Lottie wants to wear her princess dress to school, and the ensuing battle is hilarious for both parents and children.

The Princess and the Potty by Wendy Lewison Potty training for a princess is so much funnier than for regular kids. This princess goes through a succession of potties and refuses to trade in her royal diapers for pantalettes. Gorgeous illustrations illuminate the medieval kingdom of the potty princess and it's really enjoyable for those well past the potty-training years.

My Bedtime Book of Favorite Princess Stories by Roger Priddy This easy to read book of princess tales features illustrations instead of words, making it a fun bedtime book for parents and children to read together. Featuring classics that you know and love, this book is perfect for early elementary age princess fans.
