When I was younger, my mom picked up a second-hand wooden croquet set. Although we didn't know the official rules of the game, we spent quite a while "playing" croquet in the backyard. Croquet can be a fun outdoor game, and whether kids play by their own made-up rules, the official rules, or the casual backyard version, it's sure to be a unique source of entertainment for all ages. Many of the sets sold at retail stores today are a combination of miniature golf and croquet, and some feature soft foam wickets and child-friendly mallets and balls. I'm trying to find some as I scope out yard sales.
While croquet might seem like an old-fashioned game, it is taken quite seriously in countries around the world, where professional teams play competitively. There are thousands of croquet players in the U.S. and an untold number who play the simple "poison ball" game during barbecues and family reunions. It's more common than you think. Who knows? Maybe your little one will be the next international croquet star.
There are many versions of croquet, but when playing with kids it pays to simplify as much as possible. Basically at each turn, a player must whack the ball with the mallet. When a player gets the ball through the wicket, they receive an extra hit with the mallet. Knocking their ball into another also earns them an extra hit. The fun part comes when they have the choice of knocking the other player's ball far off track. The winner is the first to hit the wooden stake at the end.

Take a page from that best-selling "Worst Case Scenario" game and talk about how you'd get out of some outrageous predicaments: sharks in the bathtub, getting slimed by an army of slugs, surviving in the snow with just a sleeping bag and an ice pick, etc.
