It's important for kids to give Christmas gifts and there is nothing more special for the recipent than to get a handmade gift, given with a sincere heart and earnest excitement. Whether its grandparents or cousins or best friends, a homemade Christmas gift is sure to please. The catch is that it has to be a cool homemade Christmas gift--not something that will sit in a drawer forever. From now until Christmas, I'll focus the weekly Children and Crafts segment on cool handmade gifts that parents and children can make together and give to friends and family.

Magnet Pockets

What you need: ??? Old jeans (1 pair makes 2 "pockets") ??? Cardboard ??? Glue gun with hot glue sticks ??? Magnet tape ??? Scissors ??? "Stuffing" such as pens, scissors, bottle openers, notepads, etc.

What you do:

1. Cut the back pockets out of the jeans. Check to make sure that pockets don't have holes.

2. Trace the pocket onto the cardboard and then cut out the cardboard shapes.

3. Hot glue the pocket to the cardboard, trimming as needed.

4. Glue the magnetic tape to the cardboard.

5. Stuff with goodies. Pocket can be hung on the refrigerator, a locker, file cabinet by a desk and more.

STUFFING TIPS: - Place two pens, two pencils and a cute notepad to make a handy to-do list caddy. - Use some scissors, two pens, and some tape to make a refrigerator caddy. - Include some band-aids, packet of tissues, some cough drops, and other first aid supplies for a handy first aid kit. - Fill with stickers, stamps and gold stars for a teacher's "good work" kit. - Try some scissors, a note pad, and some coupons to get the coupon-clipper's pocket started. - Make a pocket for each member of the family with their name written on the pocket in glitter glue. Pockets can be hung on the fridge or metal door together and be a collection for mail, notes, reminders, etc.
