* Make sure the skates you have are a comfortable fit and have good ankle support. Check that the kid's skates are a good fit, and don't assume that last year's size will work.
* Make sure the blades are professionally sharpened. If you are renting skates, this process is done already.
* Be on the lookout for garbage or other debris on the ice. Even a small stick can cause big tumbles.
* Dress warmly, and rest if you get tired or too cold.
* Speed skating is not appropriate in crowded skating areas. Stay in control and be aware of other skaters.
* If you start to fall, don't grab on to the person next to you. This can cause more injury and pain to both of you than if you simply brace yourself for a fall.
*15 Minute Moment* Draw a nutcracker that represents someone in your family (a soldier for a military person, a nurse for a nurse, etc.)
