Handmade Christmas Gifts: Feathered Friends Pens

When your child needs to come up with gifts for friends, neighbors or even teachers, these freaky friends pens are inexpensive and easy to make. However, they're sure to draw big smiles on the faces of the recipients. Any kind of bird or feathered creature can be made, so tailor the final project to reflect the tastes and preferences of the recipients. Try a red cardinal or a multicolored parrot. Even a freaky google-eyed rainbow creature will do.

What you need to make 1 Feathered Friend Pen: Ballpoint pen Felt (you choose the color) Scissors Hot glue Googly eyes 3 to 5 craft feathers (you choose the color)

What you do: 1. Cut a strip of felt that is 1 inch wide and the length of the pen long. Measure as exactly as you can by rolling the felt around the pen WITHOUT glue. Trim any excess felt so that the two edges of the felt barely overlap.

2. Run a thin bead of hot glue along the short edge of the felt that will be at the non-writing end of the pen.

3. Place the feathers on the hot glue bead so that most of the feather is sticking out of the felt.

4. Run a thin bead of hot glue along one long edge of the felt. Place the pen on the felt, then roll up the pen in the felt. Glue the other edge and press the felt ends together. The feathers should be sticking out from the end of the pen with their ends tucked inside the felt, against the pen.

5. Once the hot glue is dry, glue on googly eyes and any additional felt details like wings or beaks.

*15 Minute Moment* Keep journals, and choose a special time of day to both write in them at the same time. Share entries if you want.
