Fun Outdoor Game for Kids

Published Feb 21, 2007 by jjmaughan

I taught this to my kids this past weekend and they loved it. We used to call it Wolf Dinner, but I've heard other variations. I remember it from when I was a kid and the thrill of being chased remains fresh in my mind. I can't recall exactly who I played this with--neighborhood kids with faces I've long forgotten--but I remember the game well. This one is perfect for a mixed age group as even the little ones can count ad take steps towards the chaser. Try it in the backyard or the park, and you're sure to have other neigborhood kids ask to join in.

Here's how to play:

1. Choose someone to be the wolf and have them stand at one ond of the play area with their back turned.

2. All other players line up about 20 feet from the wolf in a straight line.

3. The players call out, "What time is it, Wolf?"

4. The wolf turns to face the players for a moment while he responds with a time, such as "It's 4 'o clock." Then he turns his back to the group again.

5. The players take 4 steps towards the wolf. The steps match the number that the wolf called out, such as 6 steps for 6 'o clock and 10 steps for 10 'o clock.

6. Whenever the wolf chooses, he can respond with a shout, "It's Dinner Time." At this point he can chase any player and try to tag them, while the players scatter to avoid getting tagged.

7. If the wolf is successful in tagging someone, they become the new wolf and the old wolf joins the group.

*15 Minute Moment* Discuss what you both might be doing 10 years from now. Where will you live? What job will you have? What will be different? What will be the same?
