There is a great book series out there that we stumbled on at our local library. These informative and interesting books are written by Jonathan Kahl, a meteorologist with a gift for breaking down the key concepts of weather and weather-related events and presenting them in understandable text for children. The series has won several distinguished awards and are worth tracking down either online or at the library. With full color photos and clearly readable text, this weather series is a great way to learn more about the ever-changing skies with your children. Adults are guaranteed to learn things as well.

Books in the series:

Weather Watch: Forecasting the Weather

This book teaches all about the science and techniques for forecasting the weather. Children learn about the history of weather forecasting, specific tools and equipment used, and basic meteorology. Hands-on activities include making weather detecting instruments and more.

Hazy Skies: Weather and the Environment

This one takes a close look at pollution in the air and its connection to the weather. Concepts such as smog, the ozone layer and more are explored. Anti-pollution steps are examined and children are invited to participate in reducing air pollution by showing them what can be done on a personal as well as community level.

Thunderbolt: Learning About Lightning

This book is all things lightning. Any question your child could possibly have about lightning and thunder are answered here. This one is especially good for the child that is a bit afraid of the loud noises and strange lights of a thunderstorm. Along with general questions and answers, lightning safety is discussed.

Weatherwise: Learning About the Weather

Chuck-full of weather facts, this book is for those children who enjoy trivia of all sorts. From snow totals to wind speeds and more, the author reveals facts and fun about exploring the weather in general. There are a few hands-on projects for children as well.

Storm Warning: Tornadoes and Hurricanes

With hurricanes in the news lately and the devestation they can cause fresh in everyone's minds, this book is particularly informative for children who are aware of these current events. Topics such as wind speed, hurricane names, safety tips and more are reviewed, along with clear definitions of specialized terms.

Wet Weather: Rain Showers and Snowfall

It's raining, it's pouring. The author reveals all the mysteries surrounding rain and snow in this book. From blizzards to monsoons, there are enough weather tidbits here to make parents and children never look at rain the same way again.

15 Minute Moment
Play a board game together, but make up a few new rules to make the game more silly and exciting. For example, whoever lands on a blue square has to make noises like a chicken.
