Everyone knows that the library holds books, books and more books. But did you know that most public libraries offer audio and video tapes, CDs, DVDs, computers and computer classes and even story hours and seminars. Our local library is a treasure trove of fun and entertainment. With a little understanding of what a library has to offer, you and your children can take advantage of one of the best resources for education and learning wrapped up in fun.
The children's section of most libraries offers a wide selection of children's books and magazines. Along with the printed media, our library offers video tapes and audio cassettes for checkout. They feature puzzles, games, puppets and brainteasers to check out as well. There are children's story hours at set times for specific ages, where they do music, stories and crafts around a weekly theme. There are also fun and educational computer games where the children can sign up for computer time and work quietly on them.
To take advantage of the library with children, here are a few tips:
- Get a schedule of events--most are posted right there at the library or you can get on a mailing list.
- Take your kids to the library at a set time each week. Make it a habit to go.
- Don't limit yourself to books--ask the librarian what other children's resources are available.
- Get a library card for each child who can write their own name. Have them go through the checkout process on their own.
- Sign them up for computer time if available (its a great way for you to spend some time browsing while they are busy).
- Allow the children to learn the way the library works, such as how to look up a particular book themselves or ask the librarian for help.
- Enroll everybody in a structured reading program that the library may offer. Ours has tickets that you can place into a jar for a drawing for prizes. So many pages earns you a ticket. Other libraries offer certificates for children who complete so many books in the summer, etc.
