Building Ice Castles

Published Jan 15, 2007 by jjmaughan

Everyone's made a snow fort, but when you and the kids are looking for something different to do, try building ice castles. Some advanced preparation is needed for these, however, so start collecting all the empty plastic cups you can--whipped topping, yogurt, plastic ice cream containers, cut-off milk jugs, etc. It's a fun way to get started on this unique outdoor winter activity that inspires creativity and keeps you warm with laughter.

What you need: Assorted plastic containers (20 to 30) Spray bottle with water

What you do: 1. Fill the molds with water and set them outside in freezing temperatures the night before your big day.

2. When you're ready to take out the frozen blocks, get dressed in your warmest and start taking the ice blocks out of the molds. If there are some that are sticky, dip them in warm water for a few seconds.

3. Start building the ice castle, using the different shapes and sizes. To make the blocks stick, spray water on the blocks to be joined and hold the blocks together for a few seconds. Soon, they'll freeze together.

*15 Minute Moment* Find a computer painting program and draw a masterpiece together.
