Well, in keeping with the camping theme of yesterday, I know of several books that provide awesome activities for children of all ages. They combine interesting and informative text with clever illustrations and new ideas for parents. It's the Children's Activity Series from Gibbs Smith Publisher. One that is perfect for planning a camping outing is called Sleeping in a Sack: Camping Activities for Kids. It has ideas on how to make camping out even more fun for kids. It also includes simple recipes, checklists for what to bring, do's and don'ts for camping, and safety rules. It's fun to look through the sweet illustrations and get started on planning the trip.
Another related camping book from Gibbs Smith is called Cooking on a Stick: Campfire Recipes for Kids. This one features dozens of clever ways to make delicious meals and snacks over a campfire. Forget the traditional marshmallow roast! With this kid-friendly cookbook, camping meals will never be the same.
Following the success of Cooking on a Stick, the companion book entitled Cooking in a Can: More Campfire Recipes for Kids. This nicely illustrated cookbook gives even more campfire cooking ideas. There are techniques introduced so that you can cook on a rock, cook with a stick and a paper bag, and even in a clean metal can. Amazing!
Finally, for activities to do while camping or anytime, check out Backyard Birding for Kids as well as Fishing in a Brook: Angling Activities for Kids
. These two books in the series provide age- appropriate activities for these popular camping activities. They provide twists on the traditional and keep the good times fresh and interesting.
Sit with your child and go through these colorful books. See what activities interest them, and plan accordingly. You might be surprised at what they're willing and eager to try.
Happy Camping!
