Sitting in school all day gives kids the wiggles. However, most parent's know that pointing outside and commanding children to go outside and play doesn't always work. Why not join them outside and host a Backyard Olympics! Invite some of the neighborhood children over and get ready for an afternoon of exercise and laughs.
This works best with elementary school kids as they are more physically able to do each event. They are also excited about competing and have a healthy competitive drive. However, you can "downsize" some of the activities for preschoolers and they'll have just as much fun.
First, set up 6 events to compete in. Some of the best and most versatile are here:
- Running race - go individual or the three-legged variety
- Wheelbarrow race - children team up and switch places halfway through
- Obstacle course - include jumping, dodging, crawling and climbing tasks
- Ball toss - to each other, for distance, or accuracy
- Jumping competition - start with a run, long-jump style
- Jump rope contest - see who can go the longest
As the parent, feel free to join children in the events. You'll be surprised at how far they can beat you in just about any contest. Finish off the Backyard Olympic games with an award ceremony. You can buy inexpensive medals at a dollar store, or create your own with paper and yarn. Make sure that there are "Best Effort" medals for children who didn't place in any of the events.
With the variety of action, the competitive fun and lots of laughs, Backyard Olympics is sure to become a neighborhood tradition.
15 Minute Moment
Have a brain battle, and see how many words each person can write down that rhyme with "back." Whoever comes up with the most words is the winner. Try "gate" and "fight" next.
