Many children are back in school now, and each year presents a whole new set of problems as well as new friends and lots of fun. Perhaps your children would be interested in reading some books about kids their age who are also trying to make it through school situations. Children really identify with these characters, and they'll appreciate the troubles--large and small--that these characters have to face.
Start with these tried and true classics:
Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary
Junie B., First Grader (at last!) by Barbara Park
Franklin's First Day of School by Paulette Bourgeois, Eva Moore, and Brenda Clark
For some interesting living history lessons, check out some of the books in the Going to School In History series (Blue Earth Books).
Going to School in Colonial America by Shelley Swanson Sateren
Going to School In Pioneer Times by Kerry A. Graves
Going to School During the Civil War by Kerry A. Graves
Going to School During the Great Depression by Kerry A. Graves
Going to School During the Civil Rights Movement by Rachel A. Koestler-Grack
Check these out at your local library, and ask the librarian for similar titles. To order these books online, check out www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com.
