Apple Turkeys

I remember making apple turkeys every year for the Thanksgiving centerpiece, which ended up being a flock of half-eaten sagging apple turkeys, one made by each of my siblings. This Thanksgiving standby has largely gone the way of the dodo, in my opinion. I asked some of my friends if they ever remember making apple turkeys and each one said no. Come on! Didn't everyone get to make apple turkeys in elementary school at least? It's time for parents and children to bring back the apple turkeys and create more Thanksgiving fun to eat.

What you need (makes 1 turkey): 1 apple Assorted colored toothpicks 1 bag colored miniature marshmallows 1 bag of gumdrops (about 25 for 1 turkey)

What you do: 1. Set the apple in front of you. It will be the turkey's body.

2. Thread gumdrops and marshmallows onto a toothpick, leaving the bottom 1/4 of the toothpick clear. Do this for 5 toothpicks.

3. Stick the 5 candy-laden toothpicks into the back of the apple, in a fan shape. This is the turkey's tail.

4. Thread two toothpicks with gumdrops and marshmallows, but leave 1/2 of the toothpicks clear. Stick these into the turkey's sides for wings. They will be shorter than the tail "feathers."

5. Stick a toothpick in the front of the turkey, creating a neck for it.

6. Add a gumdrop or marshmallow for the head.

7. Take three yellow toothpicks and insert them into the bottom of the turkey. Place them in a rough triangle shape so the turkey will stand for the centerpiece.

*15 Minute Moment* Memorize a poem together. Anything from Shel Silverstein is good, or pick your favorite children's poet.
